With update 7.9 came a nice quality of life change to how you recall companions that are unavailable to you. Prior to this update there was a console in the commander's quarters on Odessan where you could reclaim your original companions as well as those you no longer had access to due to the telling of the story. This meant if a companion had been removed temporarily (KOTFE start for example), exiled, or killed in the telling of the story but you still wanted to use them outside of the main story you could go to that terminal click it, go through a couple menus and they would return to you.

The console meant you could retrieve that companion you always had with you and had maxed to level 50 influence to use for anything outside the story. Unfortunately, it also was a very well kept secret. If you didn't know it was there you could easily miss it the console or if you didn't know you could recall companions feel like you were stuck with just the ones you had available and having to start over leveling them for crafting or general non story play.

Now this functionality is right in your companion window. At the bottom there is now a third category labeled "Unavailable for Story" where you will be able to summon these characters back

So how does this work? If a companion is not eligable for the story (death, banishment, missing, etc.) they will end up listed in this section of the window. To get them back so that you can use them for crafting and non story missions you need to summon each one you want back for the first time here. Just like the console where you went to it to recall them, the first time you summon them they will again show up in the crafting window and return to you as accessible for use for mission outside of story.

If anything about this changes I will update this post, but as of writing, I can also add that if you recalled all the companions from the original terminal previously they seem to not show up in this section. I don't know if that is intended or something that is not working properly given when recalling them now they stay there.
