Reflections on Worldbuilding...
I was blessed once again to be invited to build with my friend Nix who is a truly amazing mesh maker and talented far beyond that (please know calling her a mesh maker is a terrible understatement)! She also seems to think I am more organized than I feel most days, maybe that's just me, but together, we are a pretty good team. Her strengths are where my weaknesses are and visa versa. I am always honored to get to work with her and more so to consider her a friend.
It feels like we just left behind Obsidian Sanctum days ago, the amazing dark volcanic realm ruled by the benevolent dragon counsel that we built together for Fantasy Faire 2025. But it's been a year where did the time go? It's been a rough year in many ways and there have been times I thought maybe I might just say enough time to walk away. I will do another post later about that all, I don't want to have my own struggles bleed into this story.
The past year has been a bit crazy all over, and when Nix and I set to deciding on what this year's build would be, we felt something lighter, more peaceful call to us. Out of the mists came a beautiful green realm filled with gardens, white marble, and stained glass. A realm where the rulers were kind, gentle caring people who celebrated an annual festival to simply celebrate all that everyone in the realm had accomplished in the past year no matter who they were.
I didn't get time to truly share my stories last year, as a first time world builder I was so very focused on getting all the details right and juggling a whole new level of busy, so I didn't stop to do the writing until later. This year, I had a better understanding of how to prepare and the time I would need to do what we had going on. Shhh don't tell anyone, technically we were ahead of schedule in some ways. I know scary and strange.
So I had time to write a story, make a narrator and some gifts, and eventually get a region quest up and running, a tad later than I'd have preferred, so some didn't get to do it, but I will do better next year. That is always the goal for me, anyone that knows me well, can tell you that I am very hard on myself with all that I do. Good enough, just isn't good enough, if I can do better, then I will do all that I can to do so. That extends to all things, creating in Secondlife, world building, event organizing, DJing, Livestreaming, and even how I play the games I play.
Anyway, before I share the story from the quest, which I promised to post after the Faire for those that missed it, let me take a moment to thank all those involved in Fantasy Faire, from the founders, ministers, and other world builders to the fans who come back every year. This event is something very magical, and every year helps recharge my soul in a way that nothing else seems able to do.
A Story of Aventurine Promenade by Rox Arten
The mists always smell sweetest just before the Festival of Wonders begins. I should know, of course, because I spend most mornings gliding through dew-covered herbs while the palace gardeners bustle about with baskets and gardening tools. Oh! Forgive me, I haven't introduced myself properly. My name is Jade, and I am the tiny garden snail entrusted by the Lord and Lady of Aventurine Promenade to welcome travelers such as yourself.
If you don't mind terribly, perhaps I could ride up on your shoulder or something while we walk. The gardens are quite large, and while I'm very determined, I'm also exceptionally small. From up there you will have a far better view of the stone paths and lush plants anyway. Besides, it gives me someone lovely to talk to while we wander.
Aventurine Promenade is unlike many realms. Here, no towering walls or grim guards greet visitors at the gates. Instead, the pathways simply open before you beneath lantern-lit trees as though the land itself has decided you belong. The Lord and Lady say kindness is the truest invitation any kingdom can offer, and so far no one has proven them wrong.
Did you know aventurine is a kind of quartz often called Indian jade because it resembles true jade stone? That's where I got my name. The youngest Princess discovered me nestled among her favorite flowers one spring morning and declared at once that I looked “far too shiny and important” to remain unnamed. Since then I've lived quite happily among the royal gardens and have become something of an official guide.
You have arrived at the most wonderful time imaginable, tonight is the Festival of Wonders. Every year the ruling family opens the gates to every peaceful soul from across the kingdom and beyond. Merchants arrive with wagons overflowing with curious treasures, musicians tune their instruments beneath silk canopies, and cooks prepare enough food to satisfy giants and pixies alike. The whole celebration isn't meant to honor conquest or riches, but the simple joy of sharing what each person has brought into the world this past year.
The Lord of the house only returned a few days ago from his yearly journey through the outer lands. He insists on visiting every corner of the kingdom himself so no village or traveler feels forgotten when invitations are given. Along the way he purchases crafts, fabrics, spices, and goods directly from his people because he believes a ruler should support the hands that help shape the realm. I once heard him say a kingdom grows strongest when prosperity is shared freely, much like sunlight in a garden.
Since his return the palace has been wonderfully busy. Guests have been arriving by carriage, by wing, by hoof, and even by floating river lantern boats from distant marshlands. Escorts were sent out to help any who might struggle with the journey, and every guest has been given warm rooms, soft blankets, and hot meals upon arrival. The servants bustle about cheerfully, though between us I suspect several have stolen sweets from the kitchens already.
The Lady of Aventurine Promenade is perhaps the finest gardener in all the realms. Her gardens stretch through terraces filled with herbs, vegetables, climbing roses, and fruit trees heavy with pomegranates and persimmons. Many afternoons she can be found sitting on a shaded bench with a book in hand while a menagerie of creatures gather around to enjoy her companion and awaiting treats. Princess Jadyn insists the flowers bloom brighter whenever her mother sings to them, and honestly I believe she may be correct.
When evening settles softly over the gardens, the Lord often gathers guests and family together for readings beneath the lanterns. His voice carries warmly through the night air while the scent of jasmine and lavender drifts all around. Lately he has been reading a great volume detailing the lore of the Fairelands and the many realms hidden beyond the mists. Everyone has become terribly excited knowing visitors from afar would soon arrive to celebrate alongside us.
The royal children are each delightful in their own way. Prince Kyle, the eldest, now serves as an ambassador and spends much of his time traveling to distant lands in search of knowledge and friendship. Princess Marilyn is shy and quiet, preferring music rooms and moonlit balconies to crowded gatherings, though her piano playing is so beautiful it can hush an entire hall. Youngest Princess Jadyn is altogether different, forever darting through gardens and corridors with enough energy to rival a hummingbird.
Prince Kyle returned recently from the volcanic realm of Obsidian Sanctum carrying marvelous gifts from his travels. He brought exotic seeds for the Lady’s gardens, sheet music for Marilyn, and an enchanted toy dragon for Jadyn that puffs tiny harmless sparks whenever it sneezes. Most importantly, he secured a new trade agreement with the dragon council who rules the realm. Apparently they are enormous creatures with glowing scales and lava-lit castles, but also exceptionally polite hosts once you get to know them properly.
Tonight Princess Marilyn will perform during the feast, which has everyone whispering excitedly through the halls. She rarely appears before large gatherings, but when her fingers touch the piano keys the entire room seems to soften around her music. At first she will play gentle classical melodies while guests dine beneath the lantern glow. Later, once the tables have been cleared and the laughter grows louder, she plans to surprise everyone with lively dancing music.
As for Princess Jadyn, she is likely in the maze at this very moment. She knows every twisting hedge path so perfectly that some believe the maze itself rearranges to help her along. If she is not there, you will almost certainly find her in the tavern challenging unsuspecting visitors to card games while pretending she barely knows the rules. Do not believe her for a second, especially if she reaches for her lucky dice bag, she's a tiny master of games indeed.
Oh goodness, look, the lanterns are being lit! That means the festivities are about to begin! I have talked your poor ears nearly off by now. Come along, let us return to the feast grounds before the music starts without us. The Lord and Lady prepared gifts for every guest in gratitude for joining this celebration of life, friendship, and wonder, and I would hate for you to miss yours.
A Last Word From Rox
I hope that if you take anything away from our build, my story, and all of this, that you take away the message to remember to be kind to each other. The world can be a cruel place, and none of us knows what the other people around us are dealing with, but the one thing we can do that never costs us anything and in the end gives us back more than it takes, is to be kind to each other as much as possible.
I know we all have our bad days, we all have hard times, and the world can be hard to deal with. But that small smile, the simple gesture of kindness, the words of encouragement that you share with someone else, they really can make a far bigger impact than you ever realize. That could be the one thing that reminds someone, who's in a very bad place, that while things look grim in the moment, they can get better, and that someone out there beyond themself really does care enough to give a small moment of kindness to them!
From someone who understands the depths of the darkness this would can pile on us, and feeling like it might never end. I promise you, that small kindness truly can mean more than you might ever dream to the person on the other side of the exchange!

“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”
