Emergency Shelter While Wandering:

Watch for shelter or be prepared to quickly make shelter. This means being prepared, shelter is important if a sandstorm is coming. What making shelter entails will vary depending on how you play, how far you are in the story and your location.

  • If you have it unlocked use a stilltent (works on foot or if you are able to pick up your bike)

  • Find a cave, crevice, or other sheltered rock formation to shelter in. (Get in the habit of looking for spaces in the rocks that you can crouch under or get sheltered in.). There are 4 states of shelter

  • Get inside a building, any building, trade posts, abandoned bases,

  • Get under stomething, duck under a base on pillars, crouch under the ramp or stairs etc.

  • Build a quick and dirty temp base (tip use a regular subfief not an advanced one for no taxes and always keep 1 of these free to use for emergency bases). It is rare to find a spot that you can not find the materials fairly quickly to make this happen but you can hedge your bets here if you bring materials with you and let's face it granite and scavenged metal will be the most plentiful as you start collecting them from day 1 and kind of never stop getting them. Making them easy to ditch in a pinch if you need the inventory space.

  • You can also lessen the materials needed by building against a rock wall! Perfection isn't needed the walls are!

  • Practice can help with both speeding up your building time as well as help you get a good understanding of placement limitations and quirks.

  • Even if you can't pickup or shelter your vehicle, the damage to that is preferable to losing everything on you because you die from a sandstorm.

Run The Numbers On Emergency Shelter:

  • (NOTE: This is quick shelter, not pretty, basically a box with a shield to protect you and possibly your vehicle):

    • Base Sizes by need: (Height x Width x Depth)

      • On foot or with a sandbike 1 x 1 x 2

      • With a Buggy (these can never be stored) 1 1/2 x 2 x 2 (1 1/2 height vs 2 height cost the same materials I tend to just do 2)

      • With a scout Ornithopter you can't store 2x3x3

NOTE: I am not including larger vehicles, I include a buggy because of it's use in gathering larger quantities but anything else just feels a tad unwieldy for wandering and gathering. Feel free to hit me up in my discord if you want me to do an update including larger vehicles and I will get those posted ASAP!

Process and Materials:

  • On Foot or with a sandbike 2 x 1 x 1 base

    • Build a Standard Subfief (not advanced version) ~ 25 Scavenged metal

    • Build 2 floor pieces and an end and one back wall piece (for placement reasons) ~ 36 Granite

    • Build a generator (you need the shield and the 2 wall pieces you put up will help you slide it into the corner) ~ 45 Scavanged metal

    • Throw the fuel cells in the generator NOW if you are rushed! (It matters)

    • Build the 2 roof pieces ~16 Granite

    • Finally add the 4 remaining walls (door optional your looking for shelter mostly) ~ 48 Granite

      • TOTAL MATERIALS MINIMUM:

        • 84 pieces of Granite

        • 70 pieces of Scavenged Metal

        • 1 Fuel Cell

  • With a Buggy

    • Same as above however, now you need to add 1 more row so 2 floor, 2 roof and 4 walls but also you need a second level high on the walls (half high works but costs the same as full ones in materials)

    • Again if rushed, get the floor enough for the generator, power that up and then throw up walls enough to add the roof, and get the roof on. After that you can finish the rest or likely be fine without it.

      • TOTAL MATERIALS MINIMUM:

        • 212 pieces of Granite

        • 70 pieces of Scavenged Metal

        • 1 Fuel Cell

  • With a Scout Ornithopter

    • Same as above but now you need to add a row on 2 sides (5 floors, 5 roof, and the second level of walls MUST be full not half so add another 3 floor, 6 wall, and 3 roof pieces.

      • TOTAL MATERIALS MINIMUM:

        • 336 pieces of Granite

        • 70 pieces of Scavenged Metal

        • 1 Fuel Cell

Why Build in this order?

Because Sub-fief claims the spot and let's you build, floor pieces ensure you can build the generator, the wall corner let's you slide that generator as far back into the corner as you can, generator gives you the shield, and at that point if you stop building you probably would be fine but to ensure that the roof is more important than the remaining walls!

Why 1 Fuel Cell?

Because reality is you just have to have it up and shielding you for a few minuts if you are going for storm protection, if you have more toss them all in no harm no foul!

This really is my first guide of sorts. I've been trying to figure out the best way to present this sort of information, and I am sure that will evolve with time but for now I hope this is helpful to you!

See you on Arrakis!
